Tantrums

What tantrums are trying to tell us about big feelings

Tantrums are not easy, but they are communication. A regulation-first response helps children borrow calm while they learn their own.

A tantrum can look like defiance, but it is often a child’s nervous system saying, “This is too much for me right now.”

Regulate first

Before teaching or explaining, lower the intensity: soften your voice, reduce words, create safety, and stay nearby if your child can tolerate it.

Use fewer words.
Keep boundaries simple and calm.
Talk about what happened after the storm has passed.
